After discussing why quality and quantity are important, let’s now look at why spreading your links offer your domain the diversity a good link profile needs.
3. Diversity: Being Seen In All The Right IP Places
As briefly mentioned in the last post, I am a big fan of article marketing. I know that a good article published on a mighty website like Ezine Articles is a fine link to have. So, why not just keep submitting more articles to EZA and gain both quality and quantity of those fine links to your domain? Well, you could do this and there would be nothing wrong with that in one sense – a good link from a quality article directory is always good for your website. However, I have come to believe that once you have your first link from EZA, no link after is quite ever as good as the first…
By tracing IP addresses, Google recognises when links to your website come from the same place. An IP address is a bit like a digital postcode and every location has one. Now, notice I use the word ‘location’ there and not website – that word ‘location’ causes us link building souls a fair few problems. For example, imagine that you get a good link from website A and another from website B. These websites belong to webmasters in different parts of the UK but both are hosted by Wendy’s Web Hosting on a shared web server. This means that both of these websites now linking to yours share the same IP address and hence to Google, come from the same source. Bugger!
This concept becomes an even bigger problem when you consider that the excellent WordPress allows many bloggers to run thousands of highly successful blogs all from a handful of shared IP addresses. This means you could gain three excellent links from the three most influential blogs in your sector and Google might only give you a ‘big link tick’ for the first one. Sound complicated? It is and this where link building becomes far more strategic.
Ongoing link diversity growth is the most important signal to Google that your website is growing in popularity throughout the web. If you can find ongoing IP diverse links in number and of good quality each month, I’d say you’re going places and your Google ranking I’ll wager will confirm that
