Do you use Google Reader? My Yahoo? Bloglines? If so, you’re probably already subscribing to all of your favourite websites via an RSS feed. Today were going to look at how we can utilise RSS feeds to create high quality backlinks for our websites.
What Is An RSS Feed?
For those that haven’t come across RSS as yet, RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’. An RSS feed is an easy way for browsers to keep up to date with recent changes to a website without actually having to visit the page. If you imagine a website with all of the images, colour schemes and branding taken out of it – you’re left with almost pure information (this is what I think of an RSS feed as). When a website owner adds new content, the RSS feed pings this new update to everyone subscribed to the feed. To subscribe to RSS, you need a Reader, there are a host of free ones to choose from (ie Gmail, Yahoo). Many modern web browsers, including IE 8 and Firefox 3 also provide inbuilt RSS readers. You can view the RSS feed for this blog by clicking here.
So, Why Is RSS Good For SEO?
Any RSS feed can be submitted to a whole raft of dedicated RSS directories. Many of these break down into topic niched categories, hence providing relevant links as well as high quality ones. RSS submissions allow you to write your own ‘SEO optimised’ titles, descriptions and keywords.
What If I Don’t Have An RSS Feed?
Not a problem, follow steps 1 – 5 below to easily create an RSS feed for any website/page you please. Follow step 6 and 7 to submit your new feed to a host of RSS directories.
How To Create & Promote An RSS Feed
- First off, check that your website doesn’t already have one. If your website was built in WordPress, Joomla, Drupal or almost any of the most popular CMS platforms you probably have one there somewhere!
- If there’s no RSS to be seen, browse to http://www.feedage.com/ and signup for an account, then login.
- Click on HTML2RSS on the left hand menu
- Enter your website url
- Voila! You now have a website RSS feed.
- Now click on ‘promote’ again on the left hand menu and submit your new feed to the feedage RSS directory.
- Download this list of RSS directories and submit your new feed to as many of these as you have time for.
Pimp Your RSS Feed Promotion!
As you can see, creating and promoting RSS feeds is easy and there’s no reason to stop with just your website! If you’ve been following the last two posts on article marketing you should now have your own author accounts at most of the top article directories. Did you know that your article author accounts have RSS feeds also? Browse to, copy and submit these feed addresses to as many directories as you can. Next move onto any web 2.0 pages you may have created for your website, YouTube, Squidoo, WordPress, Blogger and many more all have their own dedicated RSS feeds for your accounts there. Again, as separate feeds, all of these can be submitted to as many RSS directories as you have time for.
Next week I’m away on holiday down in sunny Cornwall, whilst away, I’ve one more lil RSS trick to show you that I’ll endeavour to do from the finest beach I can find…
